AAEA Peer Learning Mission to Gabon

The Association of African Electoral Authorities organised a peer support and learning mission to Gabon from 7 to 14 April 2025, in the context of the presidential election, bringing together representatives of African Election Management Bodies (EMBs). The mission was conducted with the support of the European Centre for Electoral Support within the framework of the “Pro-Electoral Integrity” project, financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian–African Peace Facility (IAPF) instrument.

The mission gathered EMB chairpersons, commissioners, and senior electoral officials from several African countries, including Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Mauritania, Ghana, and Benin, alongside representatives from Gabon and other electoral stakeholders.

Designed as a non-partisan, peer-to-peer initiative, the mission aimed to promote the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices in election management, while reinforcing regional cooperation among EMBs.

The main objective of the mission was to enhance electoral integrity, institutional capacity, and professionalism across participating EMBs through collaboration, mutual learning, and technical support. Activities included site visits, structured dialogue, document sharing, and peer review, enabling participants to develop a shared understanding of electoral challenges and practical solutions.

Conducted during a sensitive democratic transition period in Gabon, the mission also contributed to supporting national stakeholders in promoting electoral processes. It forms part of the broader “Pro-Electoral Integrity” project, which seeks to strengthen the resilience of electoral institutions in Africa, support inclusive elections, and advance democratic governance and conflict prevention across the continent.
